Fundraiser launched for mum-of-three whose body was found seven years after disappearance

Joanne was described as a “much-loved” mum to three beautiful daughters

A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of a mum-of-three whose body was found years after her disappearance.

The remains of Joanne Sheen, affectionately known as “Little Jo”, were discovered in London this week. She was last seen in December 2019 after travelling with a friend to Southampton from Fareham.

Her disappearance sparked a major police investigation, with more than 4000 enquiries being raised. On August 12 of this year, Metropolitan Police officers discovered human remains in shrubland, in Feltham, west London.

After extensive forensic examination and DNA testing, it was confirmed that it was Joanne Sheen. Close friend of the family Rachel Roussel, 47, of Southampton, has set up a GoFundMe to support Ms Sheen’s loved ones.

Ms Roussel’s tribute to her best friend said: “Little Jo was one of my best friends. We met in 2003, when I moved to Townhill Park, and she became a best friend, and remained so for many years.

“Joanne was a much-loved mother to three beautiful daughters, a cherished friend to many, and a beloved sister, aunt and daughter. She touched the lives of so many people, and her absence has been deeply felt by everyone who knew and loved her.”

A total of £2,714 has been raised for the family at the time of writing. Ms Roussel said funds will be put towards possible expenses to bringing Ms Sheen’s body home to Southampton, and giving her “the beautiful send off she so truly deserves”.

“I know times are difficult for everyone, but if you are able to donate, no matter how small, it would mean so much to Joanne's daughters and family,” she added. “Every contribution, however big or small, will help ease some of the financial burden during what is undoubtedly an incredibly heart-breaking time.

“For those who knew and loved Little Jo, this is an opportunity for us all to come together, show our love and support for her family, and help give Joanne the dignified send-off she deserves. You were loved. You are missed. You will never be forgotten.”

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have taken over the investigation. A 56-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder on Thursday (September 17). More than 300 statements taken, and detailed searches carried out at more than 10 addresses and on numerous vessels.

Detective Chief Inspector Toby Elcock said the identification of Ms Sheen’s remains is a “significant development” in a “long and complex investigation”. Crimestoppers has reinstated a £20,000 reward for information.
