Inquest to be held after Portsmouth woman Charlotte Nokes dies in prison

AN INQUEST will be opened after a woman from Portsmouth died in prison.

Charlotte Nokes, who was jailed indefinitely in 2008 after admitting attempted robbery and carrying a bladed weapon in Collingwood Road, Southsea, died at HMP Peterborough on July 23, 2016 aged 38.

Her sentence at Portsmouth Crown Court was an Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP). This was abolished by the government in 2012, but those already serving such sentences remain in prison.

Charlotte’s family say she felt she would never be released from prison and she described the IPP as a death sentence.

The inquest will be opened on Monday, February 24 before assistant coroner Simon Milburn, and is expected to last seven days.

Charlotte, born on Hayling Island, was under suicide and self-harm monitoring procedures when she died.

It is understood that she is one of four women to have died in a women’s prison whilst serving an IPP sentence.
