Pictures from the area near Waterlooville town centre on the Berewood Estate, off Hambledon Road, reveal the disgusting state the land was left in.
The flock started off with around 10 caravans when arriving on Thursday July 2 before bloating out to more than 20 vehicles after a few days to include more motorhomes, trucks, a wood shredder and even a horse. They finally left the development site – appropriately named in its current state as Ash Gardens – on Wednesday July 8, much to the delight of locals.
A spokesperson for landowner Grainger previously said there had been “very little disruption to the development” before adding: “Once the site is clear, we will carry out any necessary clean up works before continuing with the development programme.”
And the clean-up cannot come quick enough as far as locals are concerned. The widespread mess left scattered across the field included children’s bikes - one of which had been dumped in bushes along with a nearby scooter and doll.
Flies revelled in the open bags of rubbish with food waste in the heatwave while also delighting in the excrement that was left on grass - some of which was dog mess but another bit, placed on clingfilm, was not. A couple of holes had also been purposefully dug before being filled in for good measure.
Random items from shoes to cooking apparatus, tents, shopping bags and building materials were left strewn across the land and chucked in bushes amid scorched patches of grass and cigarette butts. Horse poo aplenty was also spotted near where wooden pallets had been disposed of in another ditch.
One resident told The News: “It was horrible, I’m glad they’re gone. They had a generator going all night, music coming on at 1.30am in the morning.
“The poor horse was just left wandering in the field with only a bucket of water, it must have been boiling. They had little tinted portaloo things.
“There were only a few vehicles to begin with then a load more turned up, it was just dreadful. The kids were scouting around knocking on doors asking if you had anything to sell. They send the kids out to suss out the area I’m told, with a view to taking things.
“Police and an enforcement officer turned up on Wednesday and they were gone by around 10am. I don’t want to go over there until it’s cleaned up though.”
The travellers have now pitched at Wickham Recreation Centre, with police having visited them as the eviction process begins once again.
