Hampshire cuts ties with cricketer who's denied playing over previous rape charge
He flew in from New Zealand before being told he could not play
Hampshire has decided to cut ties with a controversial new signing who flew all the way from New Zealand - after outrage erupted over his acquittal for rape nine years ago.
Scott Kuggeleijn’s signing for the struggling side sparked opposition from fans and employees of the club after the New Zealand international was found not guilty of rape in 2017 at Hamilton District Court, after a previous trial ended with a hung jury.

The 34-year-old agreed a short-term deal for the last four games of Hampshire’s Rothesay County Championship season and was named in the squad for Wednesday’s Division One clash against Warwickshire.
But the news was met with anger and disappointment, with scores of cricket fans taking to social media to criticise the decision. The prospect of protests or supporter boycotts were floated online.
With concerns also being aired behind the scenes by those at the club, Hampshire announced Kuggeleijn would not be considered for selection and called for unity. It means Kuggeleijn will not feature once for the side he signed for after travelling across the world to play for.
“Having reflected and listened to feedback from our staff a nd supporters, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the club,” read a statement.
“We value the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who took the time to share their views. Our focus now turns to supporting the team through the final four County Championship fixtures of the season.
“We encourage everyone to unite behind the team as we enter a crucial stage of the campaign.”
