Gosport residents help clear up after anti-small boats protest causes damage and hazards

Gosport residents have been helping to clear up after last night's anti-small boats protest caused damage and hazards in the town, with 12 arrests already made.

A clear-up operation has been taking place today in the wake of last night’s anti-small boats protests during which nails and screws were thrown onto Gosport’s roads.

Members of the Haven Church in Gosport were among those out this morning, helping to clear up following last night's protest after a group of 149 migrants where brought to Fort Blockhouse after crossing the Channel.

However the protest, which has already resulted in 12 arrests, also caused damage to the local area with items put on the roads in the Fort Road and Clayhall Road area in an attempt to block the coaches taking the group to Kent to undergo processing.

Urging residents to take care today, the town’s Reform UK party said it had reported some issues to Gosport Borough Council which will now also pick up the cleaning bill.

Its statement on social media said: “Nails and screws were reportedly thrown onto the roads during the protests, creating a potential hazard for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. We are also aware that a number of residents’ bins were taken from their gardens and used as barriers during the blockades.”

Meanwhile, the town’s MP Caroline Dinenage has said she has still not received any communication from the government despite contacting officials yesterday to find out what is happening when it became clear that the migrants may be brought to Hampshire.

She is among those calling any migrants attempting the longer, more dangerous, route across the Channel should be taken by sea to the Dover processing centre instead of being brought ashore at Hampshire and then taken there by road.
