'High-powered' e-scooter crushed after rider jumps through red light and chased by police in Portsmouth

Police said there was a high chance of the incident causing a serious collision

An e-scooter has been crushed after police caught a rider speeding through a red light.

Officers chased down the individual in Portsmouth last night (September 21). After a high-speed chase, the rider lost control on a bend and abandoned the e-scooter.

Despite making a getaway, officers were able to seize the vehicle and dispose of it. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit said such vehicles are capable of travelling up to 30mph, and risk causing serious collisions.

The force said: “The rider of this high-powered e-scooter decided it was a good idea to go flying through red lights when we were sitting opposite. A short pursuit commenced where his riding talent was questionable and came to an end when he failed to handle a bend and decided dropping it was a better option and making off on foot.

“A rather expensive e-scooter on its way to the crusher. While the rider may have disappeared into the night, its one less dangerous vehicle off the road.

“This type of e-scooter is capable of speeds in excess of 30mph, and is used in high volume areas such as Portsmouth. The chance of a serious collision is significant.”
