Driver abandons car after smashing into traffic island leaving passenger to be detained by police

A car has crashed into a traffic island

A hazardous driver smashed into a traffic island in an attempt to evade police before fleeing the scene on feet.

Officers endeavoured to pull over a Jaguar S-Type in Fareham earlier today (August 11) amid concerns about the vehicle. Rather than coming to a stop, the car made off and began travelling the wrong way around a roundabout at speed.

The getaway was cut short after the driver failed to spot a traffic island and rammed into it, resulting in two tyres being destroyed and the vehicle becoming immobilised shortly afterwards.

Fleeing the scene on foot, the driver “remains outstanding” but they left a passenger in the car who was subsequently detained at the scene of the collision.

Police checks revealed the vehicle, which will be scrapped, was using cloned number plates and had no insurance, no MOT and no vehicle tax.
