Chinese takeaway in Waterlooville duped by customer using fake £20 notes
A report has been made to the police
A deceitful customer conned a Chinese takeaway into giving them free food.
The individual used fake £20 notes to target the Jade Garden in London Road, Waterlooville. In a Facebook statement, the owners said they were duped following an order to Beresford Close on the evening of July 31.
They said the customer has disputed card payments, so they accepted the order in cash. It transpired that the notes they received were counterfeit.
“The customer paid with three £20 notes,” the Jade Garden statement said. “Our driver felt they looked suspicious and asked for different notes. The customer then produced another three £20 notes. Our driver was still concerned, and after checking them back at the restaurant, we confirmed that three of the £20 notes were counterfeit.”
The incident has been reported to the police. Business owners have been urged to be careful.
“Be extra careful when accepting cash, especially £20 notes,” Jade Garden said. “Please check the security features carefully or use a counterfeit note detector if available. Please stay vigilant and stay safe.”
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the force has received no other incidents of fake notes being used in the Havant area in the week before or after July 31. An investigation into this incident has been launched and enquiries are ongoing. Prevention advice to business owners can be found on the Bank of England website.
