Watch: Exotic taste of the Orient comes to Southsea at Chinese New Year Extravaganza
A spectacular show from the far east breezed into Southsea as the Portsmouth Chinese Association staged its New Year Extravaganza.
A variety of acts covering a wide range of ages entertained the audience at the Kings Theatre to mark last month’s beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse. Dragons, dancers and drummers mingled with young musicians and singers as 100 performers between the ages of three and 70 showcased their talents.
Portsmouth Chinese Association chairman Albert Choi said: ‘This gathering is all about celebrations, cultural exchanges and strengthening the friendship between Chinese and British residents of Portsmouth. And the good news is that British citizens travelling to China no longer require a visa - so I hope this new opportunity will inspire people to travel to China to see the great landscapes, meet the charming people, understand our cultural differences and make new connections.’

Chris Chang, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Portsmouth, added: ‘As we welcome the Year of the Horse - a symbol of energy, resilience and forward momentum - we are reminded of the strength that comes from community, cultural exchange and shared aspirations - when there is teamwork and collaboration wonderful things can be achieved. This is the spirit of unity and it is felt here strongly in Portsmouth and it is embodied by the vibrant contribution of the Chinese community within the city and across our university. Events like this enrich our cultural landscape, deepen understanding and bring people together in celebration.’
