A man charged with arson after a major fire tore through four buildings will appear in crown court.
Philip Simmonds was charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered following a serious fire in The Square, Winchester, on Monday morning (July 6).
The 57-year-old, of Farm House Close, Stubbington, owns Cafe Monde - one of the four historic city-centre buildings that sustained serious fire damage during the blaze.

Simmonds initially appeared at Southampton Magistrates Court on July 8. He is now due to attend Southampton Crown Court on August 3 for plea preparations.
A statement from Cafe Monde was posted on social media on July 9, saying: “Following the devastating events at Café Monde this week, we wanted to share a message with our community.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected — our staff, our customers, our neighbouring businesses and all those who have experienced fear, distress and uncertainty during this incredibly difficult time.
“Our family is devastated. We are grieving for Phil, for what has happened, and for everyone affected by this tragedy. We ask for compassion and understanding as everyone tries to process such a painful and complex situation.”
As previously reported by The News, the fire was attended by police and fire crews after emergency services received reports at approximately 6.43am.
Police cordons were put in place while crews worked at the scene, with ten fire engines, specialist appliances and support teams responding to the incident.
Simmonds, who was treated for smoke inhalation, is due to remain in custody until January 6, 2027.
