Britain's Got Talent: Portsmouth's Daniel Edison makes it through audition

A Portsmouth comedian has got through the first round of Britain’s Got Talent - by the skin of his teeth.

Daniel Edison appeared before Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and KSI in a performance that was screened tonight.

The quick-fire comic, who specialises in pun-derful one-liners, found that his first gag fell flat, with silence reigning around the theatre. But he persisted, and won over both the audience and the judges with his jokes.

Among the 28-year-old’s repertoire was: “I’m the boss of a company making a drug to combat flatulence. The staff are terrible - I’ve only been there a week and I’ve already let one go.”

And he followed it up with: “Doctor, I’ve got a problem with the hearing in one of my ears. ‘Are you sure?’. Yes I’m definite”, and “It’s cured me of being nocturnal. I thought I’d never see the day.”

Daniel’s tough start saw him get a couple of buzzers - signalling disapproval - from the panel during his routine. But at the end, with his fate hanging in the balance, while Amanda - who was born in Portsmouth and grew up in Waltham Chase, attending Swanmore College - gave him a no. KSI gave him a yes - after guffawing at a couple of the later gags - and Alesha recanted buzzing him, saying she had “never laughed so hard” for an act that she had buzzed.

And Simon gave Daniel a final yes, guaranteeing his passage through, but with the less-than-glowing testimony: “You are the worst funny comedian - but the jokes are so bad it was actually funny.”

Afterwards Daniel said: “That was a mixed response! It keeps you on your toes.”
