A 100-gun royal salute

This photograph, taken from Clarence Pier, Southsea, shows soldiers firing a birthday salute to the king. They may be Royal Marines. Perhaps someone could confirm it for me?

The tribute might have been to Edward VII or perhaps his son George V?

Edward died in 1910 and looking at the dress of the onlookers I think this may have been his birthday.

There are not a dozen or so soldiers but possibly a hundred and the sound of the rifles firing must have been deafening.

The wide open space of the common stretches way into the distance.
