We’re opening our doors and inviting you in to learn about the wide range of research and innovation activities that we think will be of most interest to our business community.
You’ll also hear from University Professors Jeremy Howell, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation, and Engagement); Dr Karen Middleton, Principal Investigator on our latest Knowledge Transfer Partnership, and Professor Stephen Millard, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, who will provide a current view on the economic prospects for the UK and the South-East region.
We’ll also be showcasing how we help businesses secure government funding to use our expertise to work on development projects with strategic importance to an organisation's future.
Research that delivers impact to society and industry

Through our research, we deliver a positive impact to society and industry, and find solutions to pressing issues around the world. We frequently collaborate with businesses, SMEs and public sector organisations around the world, delivering excellence in research.
Here are some recent examples of our research impact:
- A new partnership between the University of Portsmouth and Purpose Disruptors aims to revolutionise the advertising industry’s approach to environmental sustainability.
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), which is jointly funded by Innovate UK, the UK’s national innovation agency and Purpose Disruptors, will help to develop and strengthen Purpose Disruptors’ Advertised Emissions measurement framework.
- The Faculty is the UK lead of an international project that aims to ‘re-wire’ political, cultural and economic institutions to create a more gender-equal society.
The EU-funded ‘Realising Girls’ and Women’s Inclusion, Representation and Empowerment’ (RE-WIRING) project brings together six European countries and South Africa to identify the root causes of gender hierarchies and inequality.
The goal is to empower women and girls, understand the root causes of gendered power hierarchies, and contribute to the elimination of gender gaps, discrimination and biases.
- A new study has revealed consumers value animal welfare more than environmental sustainability when buying meat and dairy products.
It suggests that while consumers consider sustainability important, other factors such as taste, quality and animal welfare take precedence in their purchasing decisions.
On product labels, consumers valued information regarding animal welfare, food safety, and health and nutrition. The results can help producers to market particularly sustainably produced food products in a more targeted way and make them more attractive to consumers.
- Dr Christina Philippou received recognition for her research when she recently attended a Royal Garden Party given by His Majesty the King at Buckingham Palace.
Dr Philippou was invited for her ‘outstanding services to Sports’, as recommended by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) for advisory and research work done in relation to the introduction of an independent regulator for football.
Dr Philippou co-authored two reports on the financial state of English football to support the Government’s work towards the Football Governance Bill. The bill had its second reading debate in the House of Commons and has now been sent to a Public Bill Committee, which will scrutinise the bill. She recently provided oral evidence to the committee.
