Victory Quay Housing Development: What is happening at the old Pounds scrapyard in Tipner?
Work is ploughing on at a former brownfield site which will be transformed into a waterfront community
If you frequently drive into the city on the M275, you’ll be faced with a considerable construction site to your left - but what is happening there?
After sitting unused for many years, a major plot of land, which was previously the old Pounds scrapyard, is being transformed into hundreds of homes which will overlook Tipner Lake.
Over the past few months, construction vehicles have been spotted busily working at the Tipner East site, as contractors continue to make headway at the development which will establish 835 much-needed homes, with a mix of social rent, shared ownership and homes up for grabs.
The major housing development has been backed by Portsmouth City Council and Homes England, with the first homes anticipated to be complete at the end of this year.
Early work will see contractors raising the land to make it safe for building while also establishing essential services such as water, electricity and roads.
The multi-million pound development, which has received a grant of almost £20 million by Homes England, comes after multiple unsuccessful regeneration plans for the site and aims to create a new vibrant waterfront community formed of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes as well as flats.

Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of Portsmouth City Council, previously said: "Victory Quay will be a landmark new community for our island city, bringing much needed new homes, including significant numbers of affordable homes. This has been a complex scheme to bring to this stage and my huge congratulations to VIVID and all their partners in having the vision and commitment to reach this important stage."
