Gardening: Your questions answered (Aug 8) | Brian Kidd

Many readers in this area have gardens which back on to beaches. Lovely in theory, but very problematic...

Q: Sand from the beach is invading my garden and I am writing to ask for your advice. How can I stop this happening? Please. NL, Hayling Island.

A: Buy some square trellis, which is very strong, together with fence posts and put this up along the boundary. Once it is constructed, fix black Rocklene on to the trellis. What you’ll notice then is that the sand will build up on the shore side, not in your garden.

Q: If I buy penstemons which are in full bloom right now, how long will they remain in flower? Our daughter is getting married in mid-September and I want the garden to look wonderful. GC, Farlington.

A: Penstemons will continue to flower right up until the first frosts come along but only as long as the dead blooms are removed regularly. They are one of the best perennials for continuous flowering.

Q: My paving was cleaned by a professional but although it looks like new, some of the pointing was washed out. Weeds have now appeared and I am going to get them out. I have never done any pointing before but am going to have a go. What mix do I have to buy? Grace, Hilsea.

A: You will find exactly what you need at your DIY centre. Look for pointing mix. All you need do is add water, have a suitable trowel, a comfortable kneeler… and a lot of patience.
