Pub responds to zero food hygiene rating
A Hampshire pub has acknowledged that standards dropped “way below” what it expects after it was given a zero food hygiene rating last month.
The Food Standards Agency paid a visit to the Bun Penny on Manor Way, Lee-on-the-Solent, on July 7 where the inspectors determined that urgent improvements were necessary.
Since the visit the pub has said that a number of improvements have been made, including a “thorough” clean, and said the issue was down to the management team being away from the pub and staff being “complacent” in their absence.
Food safety inspectors rate the establishment on three areas during visits with the Bun Penny being given ‘major improvement necessary’ in its hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and management of food safety.
The results are published on the Food Standards Agency website where businesses are able to respond to the result.
Commenting on the report the Bun Penny said it “agreed” with the inspection result and has subsequently made a number of improvements. This includes a thorough clean, the implementation of a procedure to ensure that cleanliness is maintained, new staff training and supervision, and maintenance issues addressed in the kitchen.
The business also advised that the pub will be fully renovated shortly.
The Bun Penny spokesperson said: “The conditions found at the time of the inspection were not typical of the normal conditions maintained at the establishment and arose because the management team had been away from the business and the kitchen team had become complacent and standards had dropped way below what is expected.”
