IN PICTURES: Jubilation as unique Asian charcoal grill Ugly Bird celebrates grand opening

After collecting the keys a month ago, a couple have transformed a venue into a brand new Asian charcoal grill, equipped with an open kitchen.

Following the success of Compass Rose Chinese Restaurant, Simon Li and his wife Kay Wei, officially opened their brand new restaurant - Ugly Bird - on Sunday, November 2.

Kay said: “We get quite a lot of customers at Compass Rose and they’ve given us really good feedback since opening and Simon is chef with a lot of really good ideas. We don’t want to do traditional dishes, we want to take everything to the next level and offer something a bit more modern.

“We are feeling really excited - we’ve already got a customer base so we are feeling really excited to reach more people and let them know that Portsmouth has a new place to eat.”

The opening comes after it was confirmed Baja Mexicali, the previous occupant of the site, would close back in September in the city, giving Simon and Kay a mere month to take over and transform it.
