"They are a hot topic" - I tried the popular battered pigs in blankets at Scott's Plaice in Gosport

Pigs in blankets are a staple at the Christmas dinner table.

They are so popular many people prefer them over the main turkey element of a traditional festive lunch. But how could they be bettered?...well by being battered apparently.

I travelled to Scott’s Plaice in Bridgemary, Gosport, to try one of its popular festive offerings, a battered pigs in blanket. I walked through the doors on what was a landmark day for the company as it celebrated its ninth birthday.

One of the reasons the fish and chip shop has become so established and popular is it is happy to experiment with its menu. I had previously visited last Easter to try its battered crème egg, while it once sold a festive box which included a deep fried mince pie.

While a battered pig in blanket is not quite as quirky as a battered mince pie, I'm looking forward to trying a twist on the festive dish.

Steven King has been alongside owner Scott Turner since the business opened. He said: “Everyone knows that a popular item in a fish and chip shop is a battered sausage so one Christmas we thought why not try the classic pigs in blanket for a Christmas special and ever since then we have not looked back.

“We have been serving them for a few years now, probably about six, and they are very popular. Every year we always sell a lot of them. We have people coming in and asking us when they are coming back on the menu so they are quite a hot topic when November hits.”

Tucking into one of them I can certainly see why. It has been a long time since I have had a battered sausage, so that on its own was delicious. Add a wrapping of bacon and what is not too love.

The crispy batter combined with the sausage and bacon is a great combination. While it may be a bit rich to add to the traditional Christmas dinner - the battered pigs in blankets at Scott’s Plaice is well worth a try to get you in the festive spirit.

Merry deepfrymas.
