'I needed to do something': Lorry driver sheds two stone with gastric sleeve and Slimming World

Ten years ago, Andy walked into a slimming world group in Portsmouth with his wife, carrying more then just extra weight he carried the hope of change.

“I was overweight and knew I needed to do something – After doing some research, Slimming World felt like the right path for me” Andy recalled.

And it was. In those early years, Andy lost around 2 stone, dropping from 15 stone to just under 13. “It might not sound like a lot to some, but for me, it was a huge achievement,” he says. His goal was 11½ stone, and though he never quite reached it, he stayed committed.

But like many, Andy’s journey wasn’t linear. Over time, the weight crept back on . “I’d lose a pound here and there, then gain a little more the next week. It was frustrating,” he admits. “But I stuck with Slimming World because I knew without it, I’d be even heavier.”

Then came March 2024 — a turning point. “I couldn’t bend over to put my socks on without feeling pain in my chest. I was literally pushing my stomach into my lungs. That moment hit me hard.”

Determined to take control, Andy began researching weight loss surgery. After weeks of soul-searching and study, he opted for a gastric sleeve, undergoing the procedure in April 2024. The results were life-changing: nearly 5 stone lost and a renewed sense of purpose but I knew it wasn’t enough .

But Andy didn’t stop there.

“I went back to Slimming World to see if it still had a place in my life. I spoke to Emma on her launch day in may 2024 and after checking with her, I was welcomed back with open arms. Slimming World is for everyone — no matter where you are in your journey.”

Post-surgery, Andy found Slimming World more vital than ever. “It’s so easy to fall into bad habits — not big portions, but unhealthy choices. Slimming World keeps me on track. One meal batch can last me 3 to 4 days now, and I know it’s nourishing and balanced.”

His story is one of resilience, honesty, and community. From the lorry driver to the surgery room, Andy’s journey proves that weight loss isn’t just about numbers — it’s about reclaiming your life.

Emma’s says she so proud to have helped Andy carry on with his journey who has since got to target with a total of over 3 stone lost while still doing slimming world with the support of group .
