Former reporter praises small cancer charity for helping her deal with stage 4 cancer

A former News reporter has praised a small cancer charity for helping her deal with stage 4 cancer.
Elise Sargent, 45, was diagnosed with bowel cancer which had spread to other organs, a year ago. While undergoing treatment she has been supported by CancerWise, an independent charity in Chichester.
The organisation supports adults and children diagnosed with the disease, along with their families, through counselling and complementary therapies. It provides 2,450 hours of support each year but receives no government funding. The charity relies entirely on donations and grants to cover the £157,000 annual running costs.
Elise, from Rowlands Castle, said: “I was very frightened about what was happening to me but CancerWise welcomed me with open arms and made me feel safe.

“My counsellor is the most wonderful person and so easy to talk to. I feel comfortable enough to talk about deeply personal feelings – which can be upsetting – but I always walk out with a smile on my face because her positive energy is infectious.
“Everyone at CancerWise is so kind and I have had the most relaxing massages and reiki which is just what you need at such an anxious time. I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for and continue to do for me. CancerWise is tiny but massively punches above its weight. If you are thinking of donating to a charity, please consider this amazing organisation.”
Founded in 1983, CancerWise supports the emotional health and wellbeing of people who are affected by cancer across West Sussex and the greater Portsmouth area.

Operations manager Lisa Joy said: “A cancer diagnosis marks the beginning of a deeply personal and often distressing journey, not only for the individual but for their entire family. That is why we provide support from the moment of diagnosis, through treatment, bereavement, and beyond. Our services extend to family members, carers, and children, recognising the profound emotional toll cancer can have on the whole family unit.
“All services are delivered without restriction on the number of sessions, ensuring every client receives the depth and duration of care they need. This personalised approach helps individuals manage fear, anxiety, and depression, feelings that are all too common following a diagnosis, and enhances the healing process alongside clinical treatment.”
