Find a GP: how to compare local GP surgeries and find out their ranking using the GP Patient Survey

The GP Patient Survey helps you find out how your local practice is performing 🩺

  • The GP Patient Survey allows patients to share their experience of their GP practice.
  • The survey helps the NHS to improve GP practices.
  • It also helps patients see how their GP surgery is performing and compare it with other practises in the area.

In its twentieth year, the GP Patient Survey helps both patients and the NHS find out how GP practises are performing across the country.

More than 700,000 patients in England completed the 2025 survey, which was carried out between January and March last year, and gathers information on how patients feel about their local GP.

Across England, the majority of patients described their overall experience of their GP practice as ‘very good’ (44%) or ‘fairly good’ (31%).

But how do you find out how your local GP surgery performed, or compare different practises in your area? Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the GP Patient Survey?

The GP Patient Survey is produced by Ipsos on behalf of NHS England. It gives patients the opportunity to share their experiences of their GP practice and other local NHS services.

It asks questions about a range of topics, such as how easy or difficult it is to contact your practice, the quality of care received from healthcare professionals, and the experience of NHS services when your GP practice is closed. It also includes questions about patient experiences of NHS dental and pharmacy services.

It is carried out every year, with the GP Patient Survey for 2026 currently underway. More than three million patients aged over 16 registered with a GP in England have been invited to share their experience. The survey is voluntary, with participants contacted by post, text message or via the NHS App.

How to find and compare GP surgeries in your area

The GP Patient Survey results are available to view at the GP Patient Survey. To find out how your GP practice performed, simply enter your GP surgery name, search by your postcode or by your GP practice code.

You can also compare GP practices by using the analysis tool, which has a helpful compare section. You can assess three practices at once, looking at how patients rated their last contact with the GP, last appointment, health experience and overall GP surgery experience.

This can also be sorted into patients’ gender, age, ethnicity and whether or not they have a long-term health condition.

This tool is a handy way for members of the public to compare how different GP surgeries in their area are performing, and is an informative comparison tool for anyone who is moving to a new area and looking for a GP, or who is looking to change surgeries.
