'Distressed' girl coaxed from A3(M) bridge near Havant taken to hospital after ordeal

POLICE have revealed a ‘distressed’ girl who was coaxed from a bridge on the A3(M) was taken to hospital after her ordeal.

Traffic on both sides of the carriageway at Bedhampton had to be stopped on Wednesday night to ensure the person could be led to safety.

Police confirmed the ‘incident was resolved’ after receiving a call at 7.46pm following a ‘concern for welfare after a girl was seen on a bridge’.

‘A road closure was put on the southbound carriageway whist we dealt with this incident,’ a spokeswoman said.

‘The incident was resolved and the girl moved onto the right side of the railing. She was taken to hospital with ambulance staff

Yesterday, just after the incident, police from Waterlooville posted on Facebook: ‘Thank you everyone who stopped on the A3 moments ago whilst we helped a young person in distress get the support they needed and brought them back on the right side of the bridge.

‘For so many sufferers of mental ill health at some point in their life, this is an important reminder that it is okay not to be okay.’

Anyone who is struggling with mental health should contact the Samaritans by dialling 116 123.
