School closures: Full list of Hampshire schools which will shut early as 'extreme' heatwave is set to strike the county

More than 100 schools across Hampshire are making preparations for the soaring temperatures - including closing at lunchtime.

A red weather warning has been issued which could see temperatures hit more than 36C in some parts of the county later this week, with the Met Office warning in place for Wednesday and Thursday (June 24 and 25) across the middle and north of the county.

In a closure notification report Crestwood Community School in Eastleigh said: “Our buildings are measuring between 40C and 45C.”

An red warning is also in place for the whole of the county with temperatures already reaching 39 degrees on Hayling Island.

A number of schools across the county have already begun to tell parents of early closures or the option of collecting their children early. The Year 5 Portsmouth Book Award event, which was due to take place at the Kings Theatre on Wednesday morning (June 24).

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council said: “We understand the concerns relating to the current hot weather and have contacted all schools reminding them they should continue to act in accordance with guidance from the Department for Education and from our own Health and Safety and Public Health teams.

“We have also shared general advice around keeping buildings cool, being alert to the signs of heat related health conditions, and keeping children and staff hydrated and protected from the sun.

“While schools are not normally expected to close in hot weather, they are responsible for taking their own operational decisions and have individual risk assessments in relation to weather conditions.

“More generally, we are continuing to provide advice and guidance for everyone in the hot weather, including the most vulnerable.”
