Portsmouth named among the best for student nightlife in 2026 with the second cheapest cocktails
Portsmouth has been named as among top 15 best UK areas for student nightlife in 2026, and has the second cheapest cocktails
For many undergraduates, what happens after lectures can matter just as much as what happens in them. From budget-friendly pints and packed club nights to late-night takeaways and safe walks home, nightlife shapes the social side of university life in a big way. But have you ever wondered which areas in the UK are the best for student nightlife in 2026?
To answer that, researchers at University of Melbourne Online analysed 55 major university areas across the UK, ranking them on how well they deliver a well-rounded night out. Rather than focusing purely on big cities, the study examined a mix of historic towns, seaside hubs and student-dominated communities, using a balanced scoring system built around four pillars: Affordability, Places to Go, Safety and what researchers dubbed “The Vibe Check”.
In total, 12 metrics were assessed and weighted according to their importance to student life. Affordability accounted for 30% of the overall score, covering average pint prices, cocktail costs, taxi fares and the price of a late-night fast food meal. Another 30% focused on venue density, including bars, pubs, nightclubs, live music venues and late-night food spots per 10,000 residents. Safety made up 10% of the ranking, using a walking-alone-at-night index. The remaining 30% captured the city’s social energy, measuring student population concentration, TikTok nightlife hashtags and Google search demand for a “night out in [city]”. Data was sourced from Numbeo, Expatistan, Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, TripAdvisor, the ONS, HESA, TikTok and Google Trends, with all scores normalised to ensure fair comparison.
Portsmouth ranks 14th overall with a total score of 35.97, and it earns its spot largely by being one of the more budget-friendly places for a student night out. Drinks are a clear strength: pints average £4.70, ranking 18th, while cocktails come in at just £7.00, ranking 2nd in the entire study. Getting around is also relatively affordable, with taxi start costs or a 1km journey at £1.18, placing 14th, and late-night meals averaging £6.79, ranking 7th. In other words, Portsmouth is the kind of place where you can actually say “one more round” without instantly regretting it the next morning.
Where it loses ground is in density and buzz. Portsmouth ranks 21st for bars and pubs per 10,000 people (6.83) and also 21st for nightclubs (0.64), with live music venues ranking 22nd and late-night food spots 21st. Safety sits around the middle of the table at 20th, with a walking-alone-at-night score of 49.11, while the student population concentration is lower than many higher-ranked cities at 1,130 per 10,000 residents, ranking 21st. On the “vibe check” side, it underperforms digitally, placing 30th for TikTok nightlife popularity and 45th for Google searches for a “night out”.
Meanwhile, St Andrews leads the UK for student nightlife in 2026, ranking 1st overall and dominating venue density, with the highest number of bars, live music venues and late-night food spots per 10,000 people, alongside the largest student concentration in the country. Aberystwyth ranks 2nd, standing out for affordability with £3.75 pints and the highest nightclub density nationally. Durham ranks 3rd and takes the top spot for safety and TikTok nightlife popularity, while also placing highly for venue density. Cambridge, in 4th, performs consistently across all nightlife infrastructure metrics and ranks 6th for Google search demand for nights out, showing strong digital interest.
Leeds claims 5th and tops the UK for Google searches for a “night out”, confirming its reputation as a nightlife heavyweight, while also ranking 4th for TikTok buzz. Lancaster, in 6th, delivers one of the most balanced performances, placing 6th across bars, clubs, live music venues and late-night food density. Stirling ranks 7th and stands out for drink affordability and strong top-five venue density. Canterbury, in 8th, benefits from one of the highest student-to-resident ratios and strong pub and late-night food provision. Bath takes 9th, excelling in safety and ranking 5th for nightlife search demand despite higher drink prices. Lincoln rounds out the top 10, leading the entire study for cheapest taxi fares and ranking 5th for safety, making it one of the most affordable and secure options for a student night out.
At the bottom of the table, Birmingham ranks 55th with 16.97, held back by low venue density at just 1.54 bars per 10,000 people and a safety index of 25.45. Southampton ranks 54th, with £6.00 pints, low venue concentration and modest student density. Reading places 53rd, weighed down by £6.50 pints and the highest taxi costs among the bottom five at £3.39. Middlesbrough ranks 52nd, limited by minimal nightclub density and low TikTok buzz. Northampton ranks 51st, with cheap cocktails but higher taxi fares and weaker safety scores reducing its overall nightlife appeal.
