Grange Junior School praised for 'safe' and inclusive environment in latest Ofsted report

Ofsted visits junior school

Inclusion is at the heart of a junior school which has received a stellar Ofsted report.

Grange Junior School, in Grange Lane, Gosport, has been described as a “safe” place that students are proud to be part of, following its most recent inspection, which took place on June 2.

The published report highlighted the school is working at a strong standard in inclusion and personal development, with all other areas progressing at the expected standard.

The report said: “Pupils generally behave well in lessons and around the school. They understand the expectations set for them and are increasingly able to manage their own behaviour.

“Leaders identify pupils’ needs swiftly and accurately. They ensure that provision is carefully tailored for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, those who are disadvantaged, pupils known to social care and those who face other barriers to learning.”

All pupils, including children with special educational needs, achieve well and they clearly progress from their starting point at the school. They benefit from a broad and ambitious curriculum that firmly places reading, phonics and maths at its centre.

The inspection also found “leaders have a clear and accurate understanding of the quality of the curriculum and teaching”, and they ensure teachers have secure subject knowledge.

The findings added: “Staff explain ideas clearly and give pupils opportunities to revisit previous learning. Adaptations for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities and other barriers enable them to access learning successfully.

“Leaders understand the school’s context, strengths and areas for development well. They use this knowledge to choose the right priorities and improve pupils’ outcomes and experiences. Leaders set high expectations and model professionalism. Staff share this ambition, which helps to improve pupils’ achievement and wellbeing. This creates a positive culture across the school.”

In order to maintain its standard of teaching, staff should deliver the planned curriculum with a consistent level of precision. They should also continue to embed expectations for legibility and spelling accuracy in all curriculum areas.

Safeguarding measures are effective and there is a strong culture of keeping children safe at the school.
