"We are incredibly proud": Meon Junior School commended for inclusivity in latest Ofsted report

Staff are bursting with pride at a junior school following its most recent Ofsted inspection which was published earlier this week.

Meon Junior School, in Shelford Road, Southsea, has celebrated a positive Ofsted report which has commended the school for its inclusivity and well-sequenced curriculum.

The inspection, which took place on November 25, highlighted that the school has addressed areas of focus within the curriculum since its last inspection, which has resulted in noticeable improvements.

As part of a major shakeup with Ofsted, school reports are now presented differently with each criterion being ranked exceptional, strong standard, expected standard, needs attention or urgent attention.

Meon Junior School secured a strong standard rating for inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development, and an expected standard attendance, teaching and achievement.

The inspection said: “Meon Juniors is a welcoming and highly inclusive school. Pupils explore and celebrate their differences, recognising that they are 'all different but all part of the same school' community.

“Pupils behave well and learn to treat one another with kindness. Staff understand pupils' needs well. They make adaptations to learning to support pupils in overcoming any barriers. Effective teaching and positive relationships mean that pupils achieve well, including the most vulnerable pupils.”

The visit also found reading, writing and number skills are priorities within the school and children who struggle are able to access support from teachers who ensure knowledge is retained. Pupils also benefit from a “welcoming” library which has an array of texts and resources to enjoy.

Sara Paine, executive headteacher at Meon Way Federation that leads Meon Junior School, said: “We are incredibly proud of Meon Junior School and the strong recognition from Ofsted. The report reflects the inclusive culture, dedicated staff and ambitious leadership that make the school such a nurturing place for pupils.

“It is wonderful to see inspectors highlight pupils’ enthusiasm for learning and the strong support in place for disadvantaged children.

The school has high expectations for behaviour and the report outlined that “pupils are keen to attend school” and they look forward to engaging in the opportunities presented to them.

The inspection added: “Pupils treat one another with respect and behave with kindness. In lessons, pupils engage readily with their learning and are keen to participate. At social times, pupils play well with their peers.”

In order to continue improving “leaders should continue to embed strategies for developing writing and grammar so they can continue to improve pupils' achievement”, the Ofsted continued.
