This year’s primary school leavers will now be settling in at their brand new secondary school.
This school will see them through what is likely their first major set of exams - their GCSEs. It will also see them through some of their most turbulent teenage years, and parents no doubt want to make sure their teen is at a school that supports their academic and social growth, while looking out for their wellbeing. But unless your family is only in the zone of a single secondary school, choosing the right one can be a daunting task.
We’ve created a league table ranking state-funded secondary schools from across Hampshire - including the Portsmouth and Southampton City Council areas - using their ‘Progress 8’ scores. This is an important figure based on GCSE results and other student achievements, which helps the government to determine how quickly a school’s pupils are learning and progressing compared to a nationwide average. Any score above 0 is positive, but we’ve selected only schools with ‘above average’ to ‘well above average’ scores.
All schools on the list also had an overall Ofsted rating of ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ before this measure was dropped last month. This means that the quality of education provided, student behaviour and attitudes, school leadership and management, and student safeguarding were all found to either meet or exceed government standards last time the school was inspected.
Here are the 14 schools from across Hampshire that came out on top:

1. The Westgate School
In the top spot is the Westgate School, an all-through school in Winchester. It was formerly rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. In the 2022/23 school year, it had a very high Progress 8 score of 0.89 - earning it a well-deserved place in the ‘well above average’ band. | Google

2. Saint George Catholic College
