'It was a beautiful part of my life': Former South Downs College student named AoC Apprentice of the Year finalist
Chef prodigy one of three finalists in awards
A former South Downs College student, who discovered his passion for cooking while working at a care home, is one of three finalists for the AoC Apprentice of the Year Award.
James Stefanaras has said he feels “really honoured” to be named a finalist for the prestigious AoC Apprentice of the Year Award after studying at South Downs College in 2023.
He moved to the UK from Greece at the age of 18 where he started working in the kitchen at a care home, which inspired him to turn his love of cooking into a career.

He began his apprenticeship with the college three years ago, progressing from a Level 2 Commis Chef Apprentice to Level 3 Chef de Partie.
James said: “I never expected it because there are a lot of outstanding apprentices at South Downs College. I feel really honoured. When I heard, I started screaming ‘I just qualified for the Apprentice of the Year.’
“Life isn't about getting opportunities, it’s about making the most of the opportunities you have. That’s how you end up with experiences like going to India and achievements like getting a distinction.
“My time at college changed my life. South Downs has made me the person I am today. It will always be a beautiful part of my life.”
During his time at South Downs, James threw himself into college life by becoming a student governor, where he took his skills on a college-supported trip to India. He also completed a work placement at chocolatier Callebaut.
The AoC Student of the Year Awards celebrate exceptional students from colleges across England who deserve recognition for their achievements and have the potential to inspire others. James will find out whether he has been named the AoC Apprentice of the Year at the national awards ceremony this November.
