Consultation launched transformation of Peel Common site into a SEND school

A consultation has been launched on plans to turn a former Gosport school into a new special educational needs provision with space for 70 pupils.

Residents are being asked to share their views on proposals to transform the former Peel Common Infant School into a satellite site for The Waterloo School. If approved, the new provision could open in phases from September 2027.

The places would be for children with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.

Hampshire County Council said the plans aim to meet growing demand for specialist school places in the Gosport area, particularly for primary-age pupils with SEMH needs.

A special school satellite is an extension of an existing special school located away from the main campus. It is fully managed and staffed by the parent school and provides the same specialist support and curriculum.

Pupils attending the proposed Gosport site would mainly come from the local area. They would have education, health and care plan and complex SEMH needs, meaning they can struggle to cope in a mainstream school environment.

The former Peel Common Infant School site was identified as suitable for redevelopment, with the building set to be reconfigured and upgraded to support the new provision. Plans also include new parking and pupil drop-off facilities.

The consultation runs from Monday, May 11, to Monday, June 8.

A public drop-in event will be held on Wednesday, June 3, at Peel Common Primary School, between 3pm and 6pm, where county council officers will be available to discuss the plans.

After the consultation closes, officers will review all responses before a planning application is submitted.
