Southsea cyclist nears finish of epic 895 km ride across Spain for breast cancer awareness

A 44-year-old cyclist from Southsea, Matt Mallett, is in the final stages of an incredible ride across Spain to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, marking Pink October — Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Incredibly, Matt only agreed to take on the challenge 48 hours before setting off, with no preparation or training. Over seven days, he and two friends are cycling an 895 km (556-mile) route from Bilbao on the Bay of Biscay to Los Alcázares on the Mediterranean, averaging more than 100 km a day and climbing over 25,000 ft in total.

The route takes the riders on a journey from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean Sea, showcasing the stunning but demanding landscapes of northern and central Spain.

The trio have faced steep mountain roads, searing heat, and long hours in the saddle, but their spirits remain high as they aim to reach the finish line this Saturday.

“This isn’t just about the distance,” said Matt. “The climbing makes it a huge physical and mental challenge, but knowing it’s for such an important cause keeps me turning the pedals. With only 48 hours to prepare, it’s been tough at times, but the support of friends, family and everyone back home has kept me motivated to keep going.”

The cause is deeply personal for Matt, whose mum and several close friends have been affected by breast cancer. “It’s something that touches so many families,” he said. “If this ride helps even in a small way, it’s worth every mile.”

Matt’s goal is to raise £3,000, and he has already received over £900 in donations as he nears the end of the challenge.

“I’ve been blown away by people’s generosity,” he added. “Every donation, message, and bit of encouragement gives me a lift when the road gets tough.”

Supporters can follow Matt’s progress and donate via his JustGiving page:

All proceeds go directly to Breast Cancer Now, which funds research and provides vital support for those affected.
