When Peter Crabtree from Purbrook realised that his weight was stopping him living the life he wanted to, he knew he had to make a change.

After receiving a once in a lifetime gift from his sister, Peter realised he would need to lose weight due to a weight limit requirement for the flight.

Peter initially used a weight loss injection for several months, but then began to worry about what would happen once the medication stopped. Growing evidence suggests that weight regain is very likely once people stop injecting and for many, lack of appetite removes the pleasure from eating and socialising and the long-term safety of the regulated drugs in still unknown.

Determined this would not happen to him and resolute to building sustainable habits and to take control of his health for the long term, he joined his local Slimming World group after being drawn to the focus on real food, a supportive community and a flexible, healthy eating plan that fits into everyday life.

Peter, with the support of the the group’s warm, non-judgemental environment and expert guidance, continued to lose weight using weight loss injections alongside Food Optimising; Slimming World’s unique approach combines a flexible, science-backed healthy eating plan with weekly group support. Members gain a deeper understanding of their personal barriers to weight loss and learn practical strategies to make lasting changes.

Through shared experiences and encouragement, members are supported to navigate the ups and downs of weight loss while feeling part of an uplifting community. 4 stone 3 pounds lighter, Peter made the Spitfire flight and returned to group the following week with the biggest smile and photographs of his once in a lifetime experience, it was incredible.

Now, Peter is no longer taking weight loss injections and states how generous Slimming World’s eating plan is and how the group’s support keeps him going, even on tough days.

Peter says of his fellow Slimming World members: “It struck me when they said, It’s not just about losing weight—it’s about feeling good and building habits that last. I was inspired by their transformations and also by their confidence. Each week, I’m gaining a deeper understanding of my relationship with food so that I could make choices that worked for me and I’ve started to get more active too.

"I’ve made some great friends – it’s incredible to be surrounded by people who understand the ups and downs of weight loss and each week I leave with fresh motivation, practical tips and the confidence to keep going. There is absolutely no judgment just support and encouragement from the group members – and along with my Consultant Mel Knibbs’ support – helps me tackle challenges, build healthier habits and stay committed.

"That weekly accountability is key – I leave group with a clear goal and a practical plan in mind for the week ahead and crucially – the self-belief to see it through.” Peter continues, “I’m now 4 pounds shy of my lowest weight for a long time, I have goals in place for this year and by summer I aim to be a weight I haven’t seen in 40 years when I played a lot of squash”.

Peter’s story comes as a recent poll of Slimming World members, completed by 104 people who joined Slimming World while using weight loss injections, reveals that 82 per cent now feel more confident that they’ll be able to maintain their weight loss when they stop taking the medication. Crucially, 9 in 10 say that being supported by others who understand the challenges of losing weight is invaluable.

Peter’s story is also part of a wider movement happening across the UK and Ireland, as Slimming World launched its new group experience last August. With more buzz, more inspiration and even better results, the updated format is designed to help members feel more connected and supported than ever. Additionally, this January Slimming World will be saying goodbye to the term ‘Syns’ following a review of the organisation’s language and terminology and is also introducing a new category within its plan for healthy fats.

That means from January 2026 foods like avocado, olive oil and nut butters will be even easier for members to incorporate into their week and there will be an even greater focus on the health benefits of these foods.

Mel Knibbs runs the Purbrook Slimming World group and says: “I’m incredibly proud of Peter. In a world of quick fixes, our real-life groups offer something truly powerful – community. Whether someone is using weight loss medication, returning to group or starting out for the first time, we’re here to help them build habits that last. Now more than ever, the power of being together has never been more vital. That deep sense of community – the very heartbeat of Slimming World – reminds us that we’re not meant to go it alone. Losing weight isn’t easy and real change happens when we feel seen, supported and truly understood."

Mel continues: “I’m so proud to be supporting people to lose weight, gain confidence and transform their lives. With over 55 years of experience in helping people lose weight, at Slimming World we offer an inclusive, non-judgemental community for everyone – including those who may be using weight loss medications or have had weight loss surgery.
