Magical sight to be seen at Southsea Castle Christmas illuminations

From 400ft, drone captures the magical sight of the illuminations at Southsea Castle

The festive spirit above Southsea Castle has never looked quite so spectacular.

Local aerial photography Drone Pilot "My Portsmouth By Drone" has given the city a breathtaking, never-before-seen view of the castle's Christmas illuminations, capturing the dazzling spectacle from a dizzying height of 400 feet.

The resulting images, which are already circulating widely online, are a testament to the magic of the holiday season, offering a perspective utterly unattainable by ground-level visitors.

"We knew the lights were beautiful from the common, but up here, they look like a jewel box laid out on the coast," said drone operator Kevin of My Portsmouth By Drone.

From 400ft, the historic Tudor fortress, usually a silhouette against the winter sky, is transformed into a vibrant canvas. The drone's lens perfectly framed the intricate patterns of the coloured lights—a shimmering emerald green outlining the battlements, ruby red spotlights bathing the inner courtyard, and sapphire blue strands weaving through the surrounding grounds.

The photographs reveal the true scope of the illumination design, turning what appears from below as a series of lights into a complex, glowing artwork. The sweeping panoramic shots show the vibrant display contrasting sharply with the dark expanse of the Solent, emphasizing the castle's iconic position.

"You can see how the lights are intentionally arranged to highlight the architecture, it's a completely different experience. You appreciate the entire picture, not just the part right in front of you."

These stunning aerial photographs serve as a unique reminder of Southsea Castle's enduring role as a centrepiece of Portsmouth's festive celebrations, proving that sometimes, the most magical views are found where no one can normally look.
