Wimborne Care Home on Hayling Island is well known for being a care home where there is simply a lot going on. It prides itself on offering a varied and enjoyable activities programme with ‘something for everyone’!

At this time of year, not much feels better on a cold wet afternoon than a few festive tunes in the background, sitting amidst twinkling lights and tasteful festive decorations and gathering around a bowl of whipped butter and sugar, some spices and some flour.

This week was all about whipping up batches of gingerbread cookies and festive shortbreads. Last week it was mince pies and in past weeks and over many months there have been a wealth of delicious sweet and savoury treats, including cheese straws, Victoria sponge sandwich, fairy cakes and parkin.

Wimborne has a weekly baking club, it is hugely popular, engaging so many of the residents. Whether it is a reminder of childhood activities that some residents have enjoyed, for others a far less stressful version of the family baking they’ve toiled over for many a year!

It’s a ‘wash your hands and roll your sleeves up opportunity’ for all. Gathering around tables, supported where necessary by second chef Anthony it is a chance to chat and share, to reminisce and compare notes, the delight with the end result is only a small part of the story!

Corrine Holland, Acting General Manager of Wimborne commented: “We love having such a broad range of activities at Wimborne. We know that the baking club is hugely popular, it is great to see the conversations about whatever is being so diligently created and then shared.

"The standards are really high, but most importantly the enjoyment levels are even higher. Residents come to Wimborne and are ‘rediscovering life’, often thriving rather than just surviving. Too few would be able to bake at home – families might feel too exhausted with their caring responsibilities to arrange such an activity and anyone living alone might not bother as they’d never consume a ‘full bakes worth’ so we know this is something simpl but with a very powerful message.

"Here at Wimborne – You can do it! Many of our activities are far more glamorous or involved, but actually some home baking is comforting, homely and fun – and that is what Wimborne is too."
