Wimborne Care Home on Hayling Island is known as a very caring care home with plenty going on and lots to do, for those who fancy it.

This week has been exciting for they have celebrated Chinese New Year. Residents enjoyed discovering their fortunes – the fortune cookies sparkled much laughter and conversation!

Staff and residents then enjoyed taking part in a fun quiz to learn more about the traditions behind the celebration, including that there is a cycle of 12 years with an animal for each year. They also enjoyed finding out their individual Chinese zodiac signs which sparked lots of smiles and chatter!

The dining room was decorated in red lanterns, placemats, table furnishings and balloons. Red because in Chinese culture this colour is the symbol of happiness, wealth and prosperity, and can ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.

Everyone took part in a freshly prepared from scratch feast; a Chinese cuisine tasting lunch, where everyone enjoyed sampling a variety of dishes and embracing something a little different. The starters were a delicious Chinese inspired soup or garlic pastries served with sweet chilli sauce. Mains were Chinese style chicken curry ( which was hugely popular) with fluffy boiled rice or a rich roasted vegetable stew. Rounded off with a light Chinese lemon sponge, mouths watered and tummies were full.

A lovely day filled with culture, laughter and good fortune for the year ahead, 2026 is the year of the horse, with 2025 having been the year of the snake. All agreed that it was great to learn, share and savour.

Stephen Stace, Peri General Manager of Wimborne commented: “Wimborne has been a fantastic place to be this week. On the back of our Valentines celebrations, in our beautiful home filled with Spring flowers this day of colour and fun has been another wonderful one to share!’

Wimborne care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering personalised care across its care homes and hospitals. Wimborne provides residential and dementia care for 47 residents from respite care to long term stays.
