Hampshire residents most likely to ditch commute as 47% choose to live within 10 miles of work

Residents of Hampshire are most likely to ditch a long commute to work compared to neighbouring counties.
In a recent survey by Hampshire housebuilder, Barratt David Wilson Homes, 47% of respondents living in the county said they would prefer to live within 10 miles of their workplace, with the average commute distance of 9.4 miles.
This compares to 29% in neighbouring Dorset, where the average commute distance is 10.2 miles and 28% in Wiltshire where the average commute distance is 18.6 miles.
The survey also asked respondents to specify why they would not prefer to live closer to their place of work if their commute was more than 10 miles. Over 10% said their work is in London and while their commute was longer, they lived close enough to public transport links to make it worthwhile.
“Hampshire has a great mix of countryside and a thriving business economy” says Tammy Bishop, Sales Director at Barratt David Wilson Homes Southampton division. “With good links to London and across the coast, it’s easy to see why people living in Hampshire really can get the best of both worlds – why travel far if you have everything you need right on your doorstep!”
Barratt David Wilson Homes is currently building Pebble Walk on Hayling Island and Forest Walk in Whiteley.
