Local florist spreads Christmas kindness at Fareham Cemetery.

Visitors to Fareham Cemetery were met with an act of kindness, thanks to a local florist who set out to bring a little warmth to those remembering loved ones over the festive season.

Garden Whispers Florist, a small independent business in Fareham, placed a series of handcrafted bouquets at the cemetery in the days leading up to Christmas. Each bouquet was left with a simple message inviting visitors to take the flowers for free, in honour of someone they miss.

The gesture was the idea of Lora Houghton, owner of Garden Whispers Florist, who said she wanted to offer comfort to anyone finding the Christmas period particularly difficult.

“Christmas can be a joyful time, but it can also bring a deep sense of longing for those who are no longer with us,” Houghton said. “If a small bouquet can make even one person feel remembered or comforted, then it’s worth it.”

Lora added that this isn’t the first time she has carried out the heartfelt initiative. “I also did this at Easter this year and received so many lovely messages. It really showed how much a small gesture can mean to people,” she said.

The Christmas bouquets were quickly discovered by visitors, many of whom took to social media to express their gratitude. One local resident described the act as “a touching reminder that kindness still flourishes in our community.”

Fareham Cemetery also praised the initiative, noting that the festive period often brings an increase in visitors seeking moments of quiet reflection.

Houghton said she hopes the gesture encourages others to share small acts of kindness during the holidays. “It doesn’t have to be grand. Sometimes a simple bloom in a moment of grief can mean more than words.”

The heart-warming initiative has already sparked conversations about making the tradition an annual act of remembrance and compassion within the community.
