This December, Tenchley Manor care home in Selsey is spreading festive cheer through the Healthcare Homes Christmas Companions campaign, bringing residents from care homes and homecare branches from across the country, together with a heartwarming letter exchange.

Throughout the month, residents have been paired with someone from a different home or branch and invited to share handwritten messages filled with memories, personal stories, and cherished Christmas traditions.

From favourite festive foods to treasured childhood moments, these letters offer a glimpse into the joys of past festive seasons.

Loneliness among older adults often increases during the winter months due to shorter days, colder weather, and reduced social contact.

The Christmas Companion initiative is designed to help ease this, by sharing stories and reflections, residents are forming new friendships, sparking conversation, and creating meaningful memories, even with people they may not have met before.

Healthcare Homes recognises these challenges and works closely with residents and families to provide consistent companionship, meaningful activities, and practical support throughout the festive season.

“Activities like this are particularly valuable at Christmas,” said a Healthcare Homes spokesperson. “They give residents the opportunity to reflect on happy memories, share personal stories, and enjoy the festive spirit together.

"It’s a simple way to bring joy, comfort, and companionship to those who may be feeling isolated during the holidays. We can't wait to see residents receiving their Christmas letters"

Beyond the letter exchange, residents are encouraged to participate in seasonal events, crafts, music sessions, festive baking, and reminiscence activities.

For those who may need extra support, short respite stays, either in care homes or through homecare services, provide companionship, festive celebrations, and peace of mind for families.
