Care home hosts amazing intergenerational games afternoon

Residents of a Hayling Island care home enjoyed an ‘Intergenerational Games’ afternoon with local school children. , where they
Residents at Wimborne Care Home invited children from the local after school group – ‘We All Value Each Other’; known as WAVE, to take part in the day with those children having earlier sent and received valentines cards with residents.
The reports are singularly of an afternoon that was a great success. There were two tables at play. One the first a student taught everyone else how to play UNO. The cards were large, but the laughs and enjoyment were far larger. There was gamesmanship, good humour, gentle teasing, ‘paybacks’, competitiveness and above all much fun. Some would say it was at times ‘brutal’ – if you know UNO, ‘you’ll know’! If you don’t yet, Wimborne have invited others to feel free to come along and find out more, it was certainly a winner.
The second table was ‘scrabble central’ and at one stage several students were ‘doing battle’ with one resident holding them all at bay. Again, competition that was such great fun.

One resident who’s eyesight prevented her joining in the scrabble was able to share her story of Olympic success, to the amazement and delight of some the students. They in turn displayed some gymnastic moves and stories were shared.
Wimborne were proud that as a home they are such a strong part of the Hayling Community but even more so to share with these youngsters the chance to see older people living life well, sharing their fun and pleasures. Wimborne were able to offer them insights, with support, into the real impact that ‘how someone feels’ is so impactful on the individual and to demonstrate to them the differences they have personally made, by coming and sharing.
Stephen Stace, Peri General Manager of Wimborne commented: “Wimborne is a great place to be and we are delighted to have had the pleasure of the company of the WAVE team. They had fun, we had fun, the sun shone, the drinks and biscuits were enjoyed, it was all in all a really, really great afternoon and one we can’t wait to do again next month!’
