Call My Bluff Quiz helps to raise thousands for paediatric redevelopment
On 17 October Fareham Rotary club in association with Havant Rotary and several other local clubs held a Call My Bluff Quiz evening, based on the TV series of the 1960s to 1980s (Frank Muir, Patrick Campbell etc).
The event helped to raise funds towards QA Hospital’s paediatric emergency department redevelopment project to pay for the artwork to be printed and installed, the artwork being provided free by local artist Lizzie Cornelius. The target for the whole project (not just this event) was £7,000
The artwork plays an important part in calming and relaxing children that come into the unit, creating a child-friendly atmosphere, which in turn enables the medical team to treat the child much quicker and achieve better outcomes.
A dozen teams of six people met at the Village Hotel near Cosham, which proved to be a perfect venue for this event. Twelve rounds to select the true meaning of a word followed, examples of the words included ‘doryphore’ (a filter, love of fish or pedantic person*), ‘cattalo’ (bison/cow cross-breed, a metal mesh or Spanish soup*) and ‘onolatry’ (Sioux belief of great spirit in the sky, worship of a donkey or candlestick*). Whiteley club won chocolate coins coming first, Havant a wooden spoon coming last

The evening was a huge success with some impressive raffle prizes donated by companies/supermarkets around the area (raising £700 alone), the first ticket pulled out fittingly going to a member of the nurses team taking part.
Overall, the evening raised more than £1,400 allowing the project to reach over £8,000, way over the target, all going to benefit the children using that ward
A lot of credit needs to go to Mike Hurley (Fareham), Malcolm Nichols (Fareham) and Lois Baw (Village Hotels) for a great evening.
