Warning issued after disposable BBQ causes damage to business
An ice cream parlour has been scorched by a disposable BBQ after it was thrown away while hot.
Tommy’s Ice Cream, located at Funland Hayling Island, has suffered serious damage after a fire broke out on Sunday, July 5 at approximately 9pm. A disposable BBQ was the cause of the fire after it was thrown away in a nearby bin while hot.
In a post on Funland’s Facebook, it said: “Last night, the fire brigade were called after a disposable BBQ was placed into a bin while it was still hot, causing a fire.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the outcome could have been much worse. If you’re enjoying Hayling beaches this summer, please make sure disposable BBQs are completely extinguished and fully cooled before disposing of them. A few extra minutes of care can prevent serious damage, protect local businesses, and most importantly, keep everyone safe.”
A spokesperson from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed “firefighters were called to the seafront at Hayling Island following reports of a fire involving a waste bin containing a disposable barbecue.”
Crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet, and positive pressure ventilation fans were deployed to clear smoke from the area before they left the scene at 9.20pm.
The fire service and funfair have urged people to dispose of BBQs correctly to reduce risk by ensuring they have cooled down before throwing them away. You should also keep a bucket of water nearby and they should never be lit in tents, near trees or in flammable spaces.
