Coffee has a stronghold in this city
This Hampshire city has one of the strongest independent coffee scenes in the country.
Capital on Tap has revealed the UK’s independent coffee hotspots after analysing coffee shop distribution in the 30 largest cities.
The study compared the number of independent coffee shops with major chains, including Costa, Starbucks, Pret A Manger, and Caffè Nero, mapping which model dominates in each city relative to population size.
Brighton has taken the top spot, with 57.7 independents per 100,000 residents while Portsmouth has come ninth on the leaderboard.
The research found there are 27.3 independent coffee shops per 100,000 people and 66.3 per cent of the city’s cafés are unaffiliated with major chains.
Local favourites include Southsea Coffee, Hideout Coffee Company, Baffled Coffee and Bay Coffee.
