Supernatural Tours revamps Portsmouth ghost tour - when is the next one taking place?

As a city steeped in history, it’s no surprise that Portsmouth has so many stories from its past.

For the past 20 years, a company has been sharing some of the spookiest ghost stories of yesteryear, from spectres in pub windows to the tale of Buster Crabb.

Supernatural Tours, based in Portsmouth, takes people on walking tours of Old Portsmouth, telling stories that range from intriguing to downright scary.

Now the company, which also holds ghost tours in Winchester and Southampton, has revamped its Portsmouth tour - bringing fresh stories and a new route to the monthly walk.

Co-founder Andrew Frewing-House said: “We have been running the tour for a number of years and it’s always evolving. We’ve uncovered a lot of new accounts over the years and we felt it was time to showcase them and give a fresh experience to our customers.

“We’ve added in some accounts from around the Garrison Church which are pretty creepy. But we have also kept some elements of the original tour. The smugglers who always get up to mischief and get a great reaction from the audience are still there.”

Taking their guests through Old Portsmouth, Andrew and his friend, James Kemp, play a variety of different characters throughout the tour, complete with costume changes and the occasional jumpscare.

Often, there is a chance to see a real ghost by the end of the tour - and those who have been before know it’s absolutely worth the wait.

Andrew added: “Portsmouth is such a historic city and I think in recent years people have continued to become more open to the possibility of ghosts.

“I also think that people are fascinated by something that we don’t yet understand and can give us a few scares, whether that’s our stories or physically scaring them ourselves.”

The next Portsmouth ghost tour will be held on Tuesday, April 7. To book tickets, go to supernaturaltours.co.uk.
