Hundreds of punters celebrate The Rutland Arm's reopening with launch night following abrupt closure last year

Punters are jumping for joy after a treasured Southsea pub reopened under new management over the weekend.

The Rutland Arms, in Francis Avenue, celebrated its grand opening on February 6 after being taken over by Joel Wheeler who has high hopes for the pub’s future.

The 39-year-old, who has years of experience in the hospitality industry, decided to take on the venue, which is owned by Stonegate Pub Group, after noticing its wasted potential following its abrupt closure last year.

He previously said: “I’ve been running bars and restaurants since 2014. From to Brighton to Hampshire and now I want to do something for myself and I want to do it for the community as well because I feel that is something Portsmouth is lacking because we don’t have enough community hubs.”

Kate Davis, the pub’s new general manager, explained: “It’s been amazing. The local community has really enjoyed having us back open. We’ve had so many people come through the door and say they are happy we are open and it’s a local community pub.

“We had a launch night on Friday where over 300 people attended - we’ve had singers over the weekend and a carvery and a lot of people have attended that as well.”

In due course The Rutland Arms is hoping to host a number of events and community inititiaves including mother and toddler groups, charity evenings, darts, pool, live music and quiz nights.
