One of the fastest growing sports in the UK has a new home in Portsmouth after a purpose built six court facility held its grand opening.
The ribbon was cut to officially open Padel Quarter in Admiral Park, next to Hilsea Railway Station, on Friday, September 18. The new centre for padel has been much anticipated with enthusiasts from the city having to travel to Fareham and further afield to play due to a lack of courts in the city.
Padel Quarter not only houses six courts but also features a café, pro shop and a gym. The opening has been a long time coming for owner Andrew Baxter.
The 60-year-old said: “It has been a labour of love, we started this project around April last year and has taken a lot of hard work to get it up and running. There is feeling of relief now that we are here and open.
“The people of Portsmouth have been incredibly friendly and helpful, so I'm really happy that we are open and to get to the fun phase of welcoming people in to play padel.”
The sport combines elements of both tennis and squash and is played on a small 20mx10m enclosed court with the walls part of the game that the ball can be played against.
Padel Qaurter will have a selection of coaching available from junior programmes and social sessions to expert coaching and will also run a range of competitions and events to welcome people through the doors.
Charyle Mercer, 37, the club manager, said: “We want to create a community where people feel that they belong and feel welcome. We want padel to be about more than the sport itself, it’s about meeting people, making friends, being active, improving physical and mental wellbeing all the while creating a space that people feel safe in and want to spend their time.
“I’m really proud of what we have achieved to get here but this is just the beginning.”
Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Cllr Abdul Kadir was on hand to cut the ribbon and officially open the new site.
He said: “Portsmouth has a proud sporting tradition and it is wonderful to see this new facility that encourages people of all ages and abilities to get active, make new connections and enjoy being part of their community.
“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in bringing this project to life. I wish Padel Quarter every success and hope it inspires many people to pick up a padel racquet and give the sport a try.”
Courts are available for booking in advance while a range of memberships are available starting at £15 a month for concession or £20 for padel only memberships. More details can be found at https://padelquarter.net/.
