Old Portsmouth's "cherished" Monks Bar to reopen after several years with fresh look following major renovation
A new lease of life is being injected into a cherished bar which has been closed for several years.
The wine bar in the High Street was a popular staple in the city before it closed down after Fullers acquired Gales Brewery.
After being a vacant site for several years and previously failing to sell at auction in 2024, the site has now been taken over by new management who has high hopes for the future of revitalised bar.
Deborah Reale, who is part of the management team at Monks Bar, said: “I think opening Monks will be a big challenge because it’s been closed for a number of years but all of the team are very enthusiastic to start a new chapter.
“We will be a very sexy place bringing new vibes to Old Portsmouth. The interior looks amazing, it’s very smart and elegant - and we are excited to open our doors as soon as can, and welcome local people.”

The bar has been posting renovation updates on its social media, causing a stir amongst locals who are keen to get a glimpse inside the refurbished venue.
Deborah added: “In the past, it was a very busy wine bar and it was extremely popular so now people are excited to see Monks open again and start coming here.
“It will be a wine and cocktail bar and pub, and upstairs there will be a restaurant. Monks is something different, it’s not like your usual pub.”
