Old Portsmouth's "landmark" Duke of Buckingham Pub and Hotel building up for auction with "scope for redevelopment"

A “landmark” pub building, which most recently served as an Italian restaurant, is going under the hammer at auction this month.

The Duke of Buckingham Pub and Hotel, which was rebuilt in 1954 after the founding site suffered severe wartime damage, is set to be auctioned off for a guide price of £650,000 at the end of this month.

The recognisable building previously operated as a pub, before being taken over by Florio’s D’Italia on the ground floor in 2023, which has since relocated to Palmerston Road.

Joe Rocks, auction appraiser for Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers, said: “Located on the High Street in Old Portsmouth, it is close to the City Cathedral, Square Tower and Hot Walls, with Southsea seafront and Gunwharf Quays a short distance beyond.

The building also benefits from 14 guest bedrooms with en-suites across three floors and it currently has planning permission for residential conversion.

Mr Rocks added: “It would be ideally suited to continued use as a pub/restaurant with hotel rooms in a popular tourist area of the city.

“Alternatively, the building offers scope to be redeveloped into residential accommodation and planning consent is in place for conversion if required.”
