Is X down? Reports of issues with AWS, Cloudflare, OpenAI and Facebook spike on DownDetector
DownDetector has recently seen a huge spike in problems with major apps including Twitter and Facebook.
Issues have been reported with various sites from around 11am this morning (Tuesday 18 November). Sites affected are X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare and OpenAI.
On DownDetector, the issues with X are being reported as 58% app problems and 32% web. Users are unable to access their accounts on the app or on desktop.

It is now reported that X is beginning to operate as normal with users being able to access their accounts.
It comes after there was an Amazon Web Services outage in late October which saw a huge number of apps and websites go offline. The root cause had appeared to have been an error in the update that affected the Domain Name System (DNS), which helps apps find the correct server addresses.
A DNS works like the internet’s phone book, turning website names into the numeric IP addresses that computers use to connect to servers. Because of the DNS issue, apps could not find the IP address for DynamoDB’s API and were unable to connect. As DynamoDB went down, other AWS services also began to fail. In total, 113 services were affected by the outage.
