Christmas benefit payment dates 2025: your guide to DWP and HMRC UK benefit payments this Christmas holidays

Bank holidays can shift your benefit payments 🎄

  • Christmas and New Year bank holidays can shift DWP and HMRC benefit payment dates
  • Payments normally due on holidays are usually paid on the last working day before
  • Benefits affected include Universal Credit, State Pension, Child Benefit, PIP, DLA, Carer’s Allowance, and more
  • Claimants expecting payments on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, or New Year’s Day will likely receive them a day or two early
  • Eligible claimants also receive the £10 Christmas Bonus, automatically paid in early December

If you rely on benefits to manage your household budget, December can bring extra questions: “Will Christmas Day or Boxing Day affect when I get paid?”

The good news is that you will still receive your money, but the dates may shift ever so slightly to accommodate the festive bank holidays. Here’s a simple guide to help you plan.

How Christmas and bank holidays affect benefit payments

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) operate a simple rule: if your usual payment day falls on a bank holiday or weekend, your money is paid on the last working day before that date.

For example, if your normal payment day is Thursday, and that Thursday is Christmas Day (as it will be in 2025), your payment will be made earlier, usually the preceding Wednesday.

This system ensures you have access to your funds before banks close for the holidays, so there’s no need to worry about delayed payments disrupting your festive plans.

Which benefits are affected?

Most regular payments from DWP and HMRC follow this adjustment. Key examples include:

DWP benefits

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Pension Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • State Pension
  • Universal Credit

HMRC payments

  • Child Benefit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Guardian’s Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit

What this means for December 2025

In 2025, Christmas Day falls on a Thursday. That means anyone normally receiving payments on Thursday will likely see their money arrive on Wednesday, December 24 instead.

Payments scheduled for Friday, December 26 or over the weekend will also be pushed back to Wednesday, December 24. The same rule applies for New Year’s Day, which in 2026 falls on a Wednesday.

If your usual payment day is Wednesday, January 1 (or Thursday, January 2 in Scotland, where January 2 is a bank holiday), your payment will typically be made on the last working day before the holiday, which is Tuesday, December 31, 2025.

The amount of your payment will not change, only the timing. The next payment will follow your usual schedule, so the early Christmas payment is just a rare adjustment.

When will the Christmas Bonus be paid in 2025?

In addition to regular benefits, many claimants receive the Government’s Christmas Bonus, a one-off £10 tax-free payment automatically paid to those receiving certain qualifying benefits.

Qualifying benefits include State Pension, Pension Credit, PIP, DLA, Carer’s Allowance, and others.

The payment is expected in early December 2025, appearing in the same bank account as your usual benefit payments. No application is required, and the bonus is paid across the UK

My payments haven’t been made, what should I do?

Even though the DWP and HMRC usually bring payments forward to account for bank holidays, delays can still happen.

If you’re worried about missing payments, check your usual payment day – your award letter or online account will tell you which weekday your benefits normally arrive.

If it’s the correct day (taking into account the bank holiday adjustment) but the money isn’t in your account yet, remember that some banks may process payments later in the day.

You could try logging in or calling your bank to confirm whether the payment is pending, though bear in mind that customer service teams may be stretched around Christmas and the holidays.

If the payment is late or missing, contact the DWP for benefits like Universal Credit, PIP, or Carer’s Allowance, or HMRC for Child Benefit and tax credits; have your National Insurance number, claimant reference, and payment details ready.

Remember to only use official government numbers or online portals; the holiday season can see an increase in fraud attempts claiming to “speed up” benefit payments.

Even before Christmas benefits are paid, you might have access to a hidden “Christmas war chest” - a mix of upfront cash, hidden discounts, and ongoing savings that can carry you through the winter and into the new year.
