The restaurant has become a staple in North End, establishing itself as a popular destination for its loyal customers. When looking at how the high street around them has changed, as well as the restaurant trade with a number of businesses coming and going, co-owner Zilu Miah is thankful for the support they have received over the years.
Zilu had history with the building on London Road from a young age. As a small boy he would stop by to buy burgers in the American style café that was there when he grew up, never envisaging that this is where his future would be.
However, on February 1, 2006, he opened the Blue Cobra with it being a hit from the start. He said: “At that time we were different from everyone else in town. It was a success from the start, the doors opened and we had queues right away it was absolutely wonderful.”
“We were different then though and our menu was very different (to what was being served elsewhere).”
While the menu may have changed over the years, it has always remained popular as proven by its longevity. Zilu believes one of the key reasons is because they serve authentic Bangladeshi and Indian food. Items such as Muragh Tenga are extremely popular and our exclusive to the restaurant.
Zilu said: “It is a spicy, tangy and sweet dish. It’s exclusive to Blue Cobra and you wont find it anywhere else, we serve authentic Indian and Bangladeshi food.”
It has not been all smooth sailing over the past 20 years though with increased competition and turbulent times for small businesses.
Zilu said: “A lot of restaurants have closed down, during Covid it was very difficult and we didnt know if we would be coming back. Fortunately we did and touch wood we will keep going.
“Our plan is just to keep this going for as long as possible. There is lots of competition these days from different types of cuisine.”
To celebrate the landmark anniversary the restaurant is hosting a Soul Night on Saturday, January 29. Tickets flew, selling out within two days. However, for those that were not able to get tickets, the restaurant is celebrating all month with an offer of a free bottle of red or white wine per table for advance bookings.
Zilu added: “Thank you to all our amazing customers for supporting us over the past 20 years, we couldn’t have done it without you.”
