View Canadian Pacific and other locomotive restoration projects up close at The Watercress Line’s Engineering Open Weekend
The iconic No. 35005 Canadian Pacific steam locomotive will be one of the main attractions at a special Engineering Open Weekend at The Watercress Line in Hampshire on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September.
The thrilling event will give visitors of all ages the opportunity to view the wartime locomotive up close. It was launched at the heritage railway in March following a 14-year restoration project by The Watercress Line’s skilled volunteers.
Canadian Pacific was built in 1941 by a team, which included many women, working for Southern Railway at the Eastleigh Locomotive Works. It was brought back to its former glory through the dedicated efforts of The Watercress Line and the generous support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Engineering Open Weekend also offers an insightful ‘behind the scenes’ experience at Ropley Station with a chance to meet the talented team who keep the trains running. This tour route is free as part of Heritage Open Days.

Current restoration projects will be showcased in the engineering hub, with access to the yard, engineering shed and carriage shop viewing galleries where visitors can learn more about the maintenance and restoration of steam locomotives and rolling stock.
Visitors can also enjoy unlimited travel on the heritage steam trains adjacent to the beautiful South Downs National Park, exploring all four of the railway’s charming stations along its scenic 10-mile route.
Highlights of the Engineering Open Weekend include:
- Access to Ropley’s engineering hub, including the locomotive yard, engineering shed and carriage shop viewing galleries for close-up views of current restoration projects.
- A free ‘behind the scenes’ tour route at Ropley for the chance to chat with staff and volunteers and find out more about the work they do at the railway.
- Unlimited rides on heritage steam trains throughout the weekend.
- Lever pulling in the period signal box at Medstead.
- Society stands displaying their locomotive projects and find out more about the volunteering community.
- Interactive activities and displays for children to enjoy.
